Safety Management

The safety initiative of Shakti Reforestation draws upon over a decade of experience working with a wide variety of silviculture companies and the shared input from some of the industry’s leading professionals. Maintaining certificates of recognition in both BC Forest Safety and Alberta’s Partners in Injury Reduction has brought our safety management system to life. Undergoing these rigorous audits has changed the way we administer all of our work and created a strong administrative foundation.

Our safety management system, outlined below, has been developed with the help of Advanced Safety Management which has built and mentored safety programs for over 1/3 of the reforestation industry in BC and Alberta. Developed with our careful input, this management system is at the forefront of this field-specific safety management.

Personnel

Our commitment to safety begins with our hiring process where we employ people who demonstrate accountability, common sense, and a high regard for both personal and team safety.

Transportation

• Our company uses exclusively 4X4 off-road vehicles which undergo thorough routine inspection and maintenance.

• We use Ford Excursions equipped with Level 3 First Aid equipment and spine board to enable ETV capability.

• All vehicles are stocked with first-aid kits, fire extinguishers, fire tools and a general first aid and sanitary supply for basic health care.

• The majority of our workforce has extensive helicopter experience, having, in most cases, worked with them for months at a time.

First Aid

• Over 40% of our workers are certified in either basic or more advanced levels of first aid training.

• A foreman or supervisor with Occupational First Aid Level III (OFA III) certification is always present on the work sight.

Worker Training

All of our workers receive training and reviews in the following areas of health and safety operations.

• Emergency evacuation procedures.

• Workplace Hazardous Material Information Systems (WHMIS) training.

• Environmental Management Systems training.

• Extensive training in ergonomics, quality, ergonomics, micro-site selection, and land management.

• Camp and worksite safety.

• Health, hygiene, and diet.

• Dangerous tree and wildlife safety.

• Haul road and communications training.

Communications

To us communications is vital both as a safety precaution and for the overall function of our company.

Communications Equipment

• All of our vehicles are equipped with quality radios and accessible, easy-to-read instructions for emergency use to back up mandatory pre-work training.

• All vehicles are equipped with training manuals for worker reference.

• Safety information as well as relevant field information is posted around camp and in our office workplace.

• We have access to satellite phone service and cell phone booster to ensure an emergency communication line is open at all times.

Formal Meetings

• Routine safety meetings are held and documented to discuss current issues, review procedures and communicate workplace hazards.

• Any safety incident or near-miss is recorded and discussed to ensure our commitment to accountability and continuous improvement.

Health and Standard of Living

Our substantial food budget is designed to meet the nutritional requirements of labor-intensive work, while respecting individual food needs. Nutritional information and field related research is made available to workers. We provide skilled, qualified cooks, whom are certified by the Canadian FOODSAFE course.

Our veteran work force has developed high standards of living over the years with an emphasis on recreation, music, and a sound living environment. It is the honor of Shakti Reforestation to facilitate and maintain this standard to the best of our ability.
